  2. I loved 300. Couldn't manage Sin City for some reason...

  3. Don't think I'd watch this. Didn't watch 300 either. I have seen Sin City, but didn't really like it. Visually it was absolutely stunning, but the story... Not my thing :)

  4. I'm a comic book reader, & all I can do is cringe. Frank Miller throwing a bunch of tired, insulting cliches together & calling it a reinvisioning? Boo! A friend of mine-- who is in general much more lenient about these kinds of things-- saw it & slammed it. Those were extra nails in the coffin as far as I was concerned.

If you want spectacle may I recommend "The Fall"?

  5. Well, I liked it because of the textures, that close-in feeling. But if the story's crap then, hey, I won't get excited. I'll wait and sit what people think of the film when it's out.

  6. Looks creepy to me, but to each her own.

What I see is a retread of all the old misogynistic noir cliches of powerful (because sexy -- and of course, unsexy means subhuman) women, and men who like to think of themselves as tiny and powerless before the sight of a pair of bazooms. (What James Wolcott, I believe, once said of Woody Allen: the schlemiel as sex maniac.) Maybe straight men really are like that, who knows? But the flip side of that self-infantilization is misogyny and violence against women (also from the noirs), which is also part of the fantasy life of straight boys. I'd much rather watch Resident Evil again than this. (Wouldn't Milla Jovovich make a decent Aud, if anyone ever filmed The Blue Place? It's the fact that no one ever will, that indicates why I have no interest in seeing The Spirit. ... Whatever happened to all the glb film projects that were going to happen after the breakthrough of Brokeback Mountain? Nothing, of course, unless you count I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.)

Visually stylish movies are common enough nowadays that I no longer feel a need to see the newest ones unless they promise some interesting substance. Doesn't look to me like this one does, and its sexual politics would probably have me fuming and throwing stuff at the screen.

  7. promiscuous, oh, yep, one has to turn off one's rational brain when watching most Hollywood films. I resent that. But most independent films are boring and claustrophobic.

The Aud movies will get made one day. I'll make sure of that. Though we might be a little...old.

  8. I always cut these type of film some slack. I did enjoy Sin City, I even bought the DVD for my brother. So today, E and I got free tickets and used them up on The Spirit. Listen to mordicai. The movie is crap. We spent the first 4/5s of the movie being pissed off, the remaining 1/5s of it we were laughing hysterically because we could. The whole theater seemed to have gone that way. We started talking to each other, making fun of the movie. That's how bad it was.

  9. Oh, dear. I feel a) for anyone who paid real money for the movie or wasted precious time in the theatre, and b) for all those involved in making it. It strikes me that so many people in the film-making team must take quality on trust. They give their hearts and souls--they design awesome clothes or run perfect cable, they build immaculate sets or prepare delicious food for craft services...and in service to a steaming pile. Huh. What a pity.

  10. Yup. That's how it goes in film. So many things can go wrong that render all the perfect elements useless.

nicola, I kept thinking about you with The Spirit, knowing you hate voice-over at least as much as I do. The movie is plagued with it. Worse, it contradicts the overall sense of parody I imagine the director was trying to achieve: voice-over sets a deep and noire tone, while plot and performances are utterly ridiculous and overacted, protagonist is a boneheaded lame-o dick, etc.

This movie is an exercise in careless disjointedness. A total waste of celluloid, pixels, time, money, and any other valuable resource that went into its making.

Promiscuous, after watching this misogynistic bomb of a movie, my wife was also wondering where all the queer and daring film project went.
