I've been looking at the electoral maps. This is going to be a very, very close election. It's entirely possible McCain will win. This seemed like an appropriate song.

I remain cautiously optimistic that we will get it right this time.
ReplyDeleteYes be afraid. Very afraid.
ReplyDeleteThat chick from Alaska we've all been laughing about for the past two days may just tie it up...
rory, when I'm not tired I have hope.
ReplyDeletessas, when I am tired and feel very, very jaundiced about the American political process. People who think like Palin--and there are many--are so far outside my understanding that they feel positively alien. But I'm not laughing.
I want to tell you a joke. There was a family who had two seven year old identical twins. they were alike in every way, except one was a complete pessimist and the other a complete optimist. This worried their good american parents so they did what good american parents do. They took the twins to a child psychologist. After hearing the problem, he said, "I know just the thing." He took the little pessimist down the hall and put him in a room full of beautiful toys, locked the door, and left him there. He then took the little optimist down the hall to a room which was half full of horse shit and left him there. Them he and the parents went back to his office and drank tea and discussed child psychology for an hour. The psychologist sais, That should be long enough." Thet went down the hall to the little pessimist and opened the door. He was sitting right where they had left him. "Didn't you play with the toys?" "Well, they're not mine; I can't take them home...." So they went down the hall to the little optimist and opened the door. All they could see was his feet and horse shit was flying everywhere. They pulled him up, dusted off his hair and asked, "What are you doing?" He replied, "With all this horse shit, there's got to be a pony in here someplace."
ReplyDeleteThe next line that Bowie says is that he's afraid of the world. I'm not happy with either one, but I don't feel it's as bad as others do.
ReplyDeleteWhat's interesting is Palin has created a criss-cross in politics. The Right is supporting a woman as Vice President, and the Left is questioning if a woman can run for office and be a mom at the same time. NOW principles be damned. This is the very definition of a double standard.
I put the ritual disclaimers in place.
barbara, as I say, my optimism/pessimism levels depends on energy (sleep/caffeine/general joy quotient). But I don't think I'm ever quite either the pony-searcher or the toy-refuser. Now a pony that extrudes toys, *that* would be cool :)
ReplyDeletewyman, double standards are always with us. I think Palin is smart and capable--and a total fucking wingnut. I ask, How can anyone take someone with her views seriously? But then I remember who's in the White House. So I'm making a promise here: I'm not going to post anything remotely political for at least five days. Time to clear the air.
We can still talk here about what's already posted, of course; I'm just not going to start anymore conversations. It's a long way til November. I could do with a break.
Oh yeah. I'm not up for civilized discourse about politics right now; I've got the Con-Crud. I gathered it from the Mother of all Con-Crud mixing bowls: DragonCon.
ReplyDeleteI must have had a good time. Why else am I sick?
Sorry to hear about the crud.
ReplyDeleteDragon*Con...y'know, I can't remember if I've ever been to one. I lived in Atlanta in the very early years of the convention, and I knew the organisers, so it's probable I went when attendance was < 5,000 but...I dunno, I can't actually remember going. Huh.
I can't help but wonder if Palin's "small town" platform is an calculated "we're not black" move.
ReplyDeleteWho knows how the wingnuts think? (I use the term loosely...)
ReplyDeleteBarbara, fun story.
ReplyDeleteI'm still holding out for an Obama landslide. That would raise my hopes for a civilized future very much. And optimistic is where I want to be right now.
duff
Yay for optimism! Seriously. Hope is what prompts people to get off their arses and do something, to vote, to register others to vote, to persuade registered voters to get off their arses...
ReplyDeleteCall me a cynic--but the election was lost the second he _didn't_ pick Hillary as a running mate.
ReplyDeleteOr possibly, it may have been lost the day Reverend Wright shouted "God damn America!" (which is surely going to surface again--it didn't just go away)
EEW
This is scary, even from New Zealand. Sarah Palin is like a little antichrist, smooching podiums without anyone noticing. Yikes. It's not just america that will be in troube if McCain wins, it's the world. Everyone should be watching this election like hawks.
ReplyDeleteeew, yes, I think it's likely he's lost the election but the thought makes me feel so tired I simply don't care when, exactly, it all went wrong
ReplyDeletelynne, yes, we should all watch like hawks
