Jeepster is one

My ukulele, Jeepster, made by the fabulous @skullulele (who also took the photo above) was one year old yesterday.

Poor old Jeepster has been a bit neglected the last week or so. I've been busy on two other projects (more anon). And, well, I've been playing with my new toy: my bow. At some point there will be photos. Meanwhile, here's a cartoon (by the inimitable Angelique) of me with the bow while Kelley isn't here...
Oh, and there's just one day left to sign up to win a free copy of Hild in the Goodreads giveaway.

Weather change

Here's my after-lunch dessert two days in a row:

I was struck by the colours. It made me think of a passage in Hild. Hild has had bad news and is half in shock, half pretending she's fine:
As the days cooled the colours around her did, too. Bright red flowers were replaced by dark red berries. The sun set earlier. The berries now were tinged with blue. Perhaps it was warmth that made the colour. Red meant life. Blue meant the blue lips of harsh breathing and death. The end of things.
Our weather is changing. Just a little, just enough that in the morning the air smells of brine, of autumn. But by afternoon it's clear that we're still in summer, still splashed with sunshine and ease.

Life is good.

Lovely review in Kirkus

I don't know who reviewed it, but someone at Kirkus liked Hild:

A book that deserves a place alongside T.H. White, to say nothing of Ellis Peters. Elegantly written—and with room for a sequel.
Which means that I've now seen Hild compared to books by Hilary Mantel, Sigrid Undset, T.H. White, George R.R. Martin, Ellis Peters, and Rosemary Sutcliff. That's six, so far. I wonder how many comps I'll have by the time this book comes out in November...

Maybe we should start a pool. Any bets on gender division (currently: 66/33 or 50/50, depending on whether you go with the sex of the author or the gender of the pseudonym)? Any bets on the number by, say, Thanksgiving? (That is, a fortnight after publication.)

Put your best guess in a comment. I'll mail a signed copy of Hild to the winner. I'll mail it anywhere in the world. With any luck it will be with you, or the recipient of your choice, by the holidays.
