I am currently having fun trying to turn my Hild ms. into something pretty which early readers can read on their Kindle. By 'fun' I mean 'not fun'. By 'pretty' I mean a sturdy and readable .azw document without ugly gaps, spaces, and format errors, and with the embedded loveliness of my map, family tree, and glossary. By 'early readers' I mean experts in their field: historians, publicists, editors, agents and so on. (So, no, sorry, much as I love every single one of you--and I do--you can't have one.)
Some parts of it are working, some are not. I'll tell you all about it on Monday. When I've recovered my temper, Kelley has stopping laughing, and I've retrieved the pieces of my Kindle from the floor...

Very very much better you than me. If Kelley can laugh, it can't be all bad. A book is not called a work for nothing.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it's really possible to make something "pretty" on kindle. It's rough code and not very editable. Maybe acceptance of the machine's shortcomings is the path to enjoyment of one's relationship with one's spouse?
ReplyDeletebarbara, Kelley laughs a lot because life is damned good.
ReplyDeleteBarba, I've actually got it mostly figured out. One or two fiddly things I can't seem to manage but, eh, the overall look isn't bad.
Eh, well, some of us do Kobo. Actually, though, I truly and totally love Kobo on my phone. Can you have Kindle without the Kindle? Because there are some books I might buy that aren't yet available for Kobo (though there is huge overlap), but I don't want to own another ereader.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I'll be wanting to own Hild, not just read it -- and reading ebooks never feels like *owning* them. That takes paper. And space on a bookshelf.
Wendy, never fear, I'll make sure it's available in EPUB format, etc. And, of course, luscious, delcious, and in every way delightfully tactile print...
ReplyDeleteBut, yes, you can get a Kindle app for almost every operating system/platform. I have a Kindle ereader, but also the app for my desktop and phone (both Mac, but it works for Windows, too, and Android, though I dunno about Linux and other more exotic platforms). The app is free.
